The Jesus Inquest by Charles Foster is A Case for Christ on intellectual steroids.
Foster writes the book as two lawyers, X and Y. X is arguing against the resurrection of Christ, while Y argues for the resurrection.
The style of Foster’s writing is very indepth if not to the point of being a little cold. The details on both sides of the arguments presented are almost overwhelming. However, Y’s case comes out the winner time and time again. This doesn’t seem to be a device of Foster’s, but the evidence seems to bolster Y’s case better than the claims of X.
This is not a book you would just pick up and finish over a weekend. The arguments of both sides are steeped in plenty of data, which leads you to really have to take time to digest what you just read.
X’s arguments are very interesting, but not convincing. However, I wouldn’t recommend this book to a new believer in Christ. Some of X’s claims could be very damaging to a foundation of someone’s faith if they weren’t diligent to pay attention to what X is saying and take the time to read why Y refutes even the most difficult of X’s premises.
I would recommend this book, but just know it’s not going to be a quick, easy to swallow read.
